Childcare in the Netherlands: Daycare, BSO and Allowance Guide 2026

Childcare in the Netherlands is high quality but can be difficult to arrange at short notice. Waiting lists are common in busy areas, contracts may be based on fixed days, and the amount families ultimately pay depends on both the provider’s price and their childcare allowance.

Start searching as early as possible and treat availability, contract terms, and benefit eligibility as three separate checks.

The Main Types of Childcare

• Kinderdagverblijf: centre-based daycare, generally for children from infancy until primary-school age.
• Peuteropvang or preschool: part-day provision for toddlers, sometimes linked to early-childhood education or municipal support.
• Gastouder: registered childminding in a smaller home setting, usually arranged through a registered agency.
• BSO: before- and after-school care, often including school holidays and sometimes school transport.
• Nanny or informal care: flexible private care, but not automatically eligible for childcare allowance.

Why You Should Join Waiting Lists Early

Demand is often strongest on Tuesday and Thursday. Ask whether accepting another day first improves your chance of moving to a preferred schedule later. Join several lists, but read whether registration creates a fee or obligation.

For BSO, confirm that the provider collects from your child’s exact school. A place at the organisation does not guarantee that every location serves every school.

Who Can Receive Childcare Allowance?

Kinderopvangtoeslag is a government contribution toward registered childcare costs. Dienst Toeslagen lists conditions including paid work, study, a recognised integration course, or a reintegration programme for the parent and usually their benefit partner. You must pay the childcare costs and have a contract with registered care.

The child must generally live at your address and be registered there. EU/EEA and Swiss residents need a valid right of residence; other nationals need a residence permit that permits benefits. Cross-border family situations can have additional rules.

The Registration Check Matters

The childcare centre, BSO, childminding agency, and—where applicable—the childminder must be in the relevant official register. Ask for the LRK number and verify it yourself. A professional-looking website or invoice does not make informal care eligible.

How the 2026 Reimbursement Is Calculated

The allowance depends on household income, number of children, type of childcare, eligible hours, and hourly price. In 2026 the maximum hourly prices used in the calculation are €11.23 for centre daycare, €9.98 for centre-based BSO, and €8.49 for registered childminding. If your provider charges more, the part above the applicable cap is entirely your responsibility.

Dienst Toeslagen says eligible families can receive support for up to 230 hours per month per child. The amount is an advance based on estimates, so an incorrect income or hours estimate can later produce a repayment.

Apply Step by Step

1. Secure a place and signed contract with the registered provider.
2. Collect the LRK number, start date, hourly rate, and contracted hours.
3. Use your DigiD to apply through Mijn Toeslagen at toeslagen.nl.
4. Enter a realistic combined annual income, including expected bonuses or changes.
5. Check the decision and the provider details carefully.
6. Keep invoices, contracts, payment proof, and schedule changes together.

Report Changes Promptly

Update Mijn Toeslagen when income, childcare hours, hourly price, provider, work, study, relationship, or household circumstances change. Dienst Toeslagen advises reporting relevant changes within four weeks. Review the estimate every few months rather than waiting for the annual calculation.

Questions to Ask Before Signing

• Are meals, nappies, outings, and holiday weeks included in the quoted rate?
• Do you pay for public holidays, closure days, or unused sick days?
• What is the notice period and can days be swapped?
• How does settling-in work, and who is your child’s key worker?
• How are incidents, medication, allergies, and development updates handled?
• Does the BSO collect from the correct school, including early-closing days?

Budget for the Real Net Cost

Use the official calculation tool, but keep a buffer. Your net cost can rise when income increases, attendance changes, or the provider charges above the maximum reimbursable hourly rate. Never assume a quoted gross price is what you will finally pay.

A childcare place and childcare allowance are connected, but they are not the same approval.
